Applesauce is the sort of thing you might take for granted, or buy at the store because who has the time to make their own. But please don’t take it for granted, or buy it at the store, please make your own because it is so beautifully and deliciously lovely. Plus we’re making it even more perfect by adding a few pears.

The aroma when making this is “Fall Fest”with the apples and cinnamon bubbling away on the stovetop. Be careful with the amount of cinnamon you use, I feel cinnamon (like any spice) should be a suggestion, a subtle hint, nothing too strong. You could add some cloves, ginger or allspice if you like but I prefer to keep this very simple. The flavors speak for themselves.

This is wonderful to have on the Thanksgiving table but my favorite use is a large dollop swirled into a bowl of oatmeal or yogurt for breakfast. It takes something rather ordinary and makes it rather special.

As far as the texture is concerned – you decide. I like mine a little chunky but if you prefer super smooth you could always blend it. If you prefer a less sweet version, just leave out the maple syrup, the orange juice does a great job in enlivening and sweetening. I don’t add any water in this recipe, the citrus juice acts as the liquid. Just keep an eye on it as it’s cooking and if it looks like it’s dry add an extra tablespoon of orange juice.

Try to chop the apples and pears in fairly uniform chunks so they cook evenly.

Apple and Pear sauce keeps in the fridge for a good week. It also freezes well 🙂
